Neutral Milk Hotel fans for marriage equality!
Oh my fucking God! I just played a video game and one of my characters died from a machine gun bullet, and the text announcing her death said, “Hannah watched as her brains fell out through her teeth,” which is a Neutral Milk Hotel reference!
I’m totally geeking out about this now!
By the way, the game was called Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, which is a side scrolling shoot-‘em-up parody of Oregon Trail. I guess watching as your brains fall out through your teeth is the new dying of dysentery…
Kind of refreshing to see this instead of “How strange it is to be anything at all” again. Don’t get me wrong, “How strange it is to be anything at all” is profound and very deserving of its popularity, but this excerpt from “Two-Headed Boy Pt. Two” is also a very profound moment from Aeroplane which doesn’t seem to pop up often in fan art.
The entire quote in context is, “And when we break, we’ll wait for our miracle. God is a place where some holy spectacle lies. When we break, we’ll wait for our miracle. God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life.”
This is one of the most interesting lyrical ideals onAeroplane. Instead of being a sentient superman, as most religions depict him, God is referred to as a place. It’s a huge mindfuck, and to be honest, I’m not sure what exactly it means for God to be a place instead of a person. And I really wish I did know how to interpret it because this part of the song comes at a very important part of the album, just before the end, at a point where most of the narrative arcs in the album are resolved with a modicum of closure.
I have two guesses as to what God as a place means. One, is that God could be seen as a phase, a temporary point in people’s lives, that they move out of as they become less superstitious. But most people never move away from that point, so they wait for the rest of their lives for their happiness to be filled via divine intervention. The other possibility is that God and the universe are the same thing. Much in the same way that people anthropomorphize our planet as “Mother Earth”, perhaps the universe is God, and by default, we wait there for a miracle for the rest of our lives. I just don’t know…
Anyway, nice choice of tattoo, Anonymous Neutral Milk Hotel fan!

jeff mangum cover photo, mmm, feel free to use and share the sexy
I’m getting forced into having a timeline on Facebook after this weekend, so I just might use this. I was considering some video game-related cover photos, though.
what caitlin lacks in talent she makes up for enthusiasm
anyways another cover.
I know everyone’s sick of the “quirky girl with ukelele” trope, but she gets points for degree of difficulty. Also, it’s a great arrangement of an incredible song.
Tom Milsom - Neutral Milk Hotel
Tom played Neutral Milk Hotel songs at the live stream this morning and I thought I would share it if anyone missed it…
Your father made fetuses with flesh licking ladies,
While you and your mother were asleep in the trailer park.
Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums,
The music and medicine you needed for comforting.
So make all your fat fleshy fingers to moving,
And pluck all your silly strings, bend all your notes for me.
Soft silly music is meaningful magical,
The movements were beautiful, all in your ovaries.
All of them milking with green fleshy flowers,
While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines.
Smelling of semen all under the garden
Was all you were needing when you still believed in me.
